How to make the most of your academic adviser
A successful academic advising session includes more than just finding out what classes are offered and whether you are taking the right classes to graduate. Many people will have an impact on your academic career. However, out of everyone on campus who will influence you academically, few will be as helpful as your academic adviser.
These three tips will help you make the most of the relationship you have with your adviser:
Understand the role of the academic adviser
Your academic adviser is invested in your successes and persistence in school. Advisers have a wealth of information that can help you if you choose to take advantage of it. If you are uncertain about your major, your adviser is an excellent resource to guide you through this process. If you are wondering what type of career options you might have with a degree in criminal justice, your adviser can provide you with additional information. In addition to all of this, he or she can help with course selection, staying on track toward graduation, answer questions regarding university procedures and provide guidance if you experience academic difficulties.
Establish a positive relationship with your adviser
Get to know your adviser. He or she can be a great asset throughout your college experience. However, you are responsible for initiating the first contact and it’s best to do so early in the semester. Don’t just see your adviser for course scheduling. Many students experience academic problems and don’t know where to go for assistance. Your adviser can refer you to tutoring services as well as academic support services on campus. The better you know your adviser, the more likely you will be to turn to them when in need of assistance. If you plan to go to graduate school, your adviser may serve as one of your references when you apply. Don’t be intimidated by your adviser. He or she is there to assist you.
Be prepared for advising appointments
In order to take advantage of the limited time that you may have with your adviser, be prepared when you arrive. Create a few class schedules that include the courses you wish to take. Flexibility is important as some of the courses you wish to take may be closed before your enrollment time. Have a list of questions for your adviser written down so you won’t forget them once you arrive. Be on time for your advising appointment and keep all of your advising materials organized and on hand. While your adviser will have copies of your advising materials, it is important for you to have this information as well.
